Use the Giphy bot

Use the Giphy bot in Google Chat to add GIFs to your chats.

Tip: You can also send GIFs from your computer. To send a GIF, click Add GIF.

Before you begin

  • You need permission from your Google Workspace administrator to install bots.
  • You need to add the bot to Chat.
    Learn how to Find bots and add them to Chat.

Use the Giphy bot in Chat

  1. Open the Chat app "".
  2. Open a direct message with the bot or go to a space with the bot.
  3. Enter a search query, using any keyword, such as "cats" or "funny:"
    • query—Adds the first GIF that matches the query with the set rating. In spaces, enter @Giphy query.
      If you don't like the GIF, tap itand thentap Try again or Delete.
    • choose query—Adds a group of 25 GIFs that match the query with the set rating. In spaces, enter @Giphy choose query. To move through the GIFs, tap Next or Back.

Change the content rating of GIFs

The bot shows GIFs that are rated G unless you change the default setting. You can view the current rating and change it.

  1. Open the Chat app "".
  2. Open a direct message with the bot or go to a space with the bot.
  3. Enter rating. In spaces, enter @Giphy rating.
    The bot displays the current content rating.
  4. Enter rating [Y,G,PG,PG-13,R]. In spaces, enter @Giphy rating [Y,G,PG,PG-13,R].
    For example, to set the content rating of GIFs to G, enter rating G.

Using the bot in spaces

To use the bot in spaces, you need to explicitly @mention the bot in each message to the bot (including in replies to messages from the bot). The @mention confirms you're sending the message to the bot and not to others in the space.
